Beyond "How likely are you to recommend?" - better nps survey questions

The standard NPS question feels so generic now. Getting tired of the same responses.

What questions are you actually using that get better insights? Need something that tells me why users might churn or what keeps them engaged.

We ask what made them download the app originally. Helps us see if our ads match what users actually want.

Try asking what users enjoyed before they almost left the app. That can highlight friction points.

Also, inquire what one feature would motivate them to open the app tomorrow. These questions reveal genuine user behavior instead of just opinions on recommending.

I stopped asking about recommendations and started asking “What made you open the app today?” Gets real usage patterns instead of hypotheticals.

Then I hit them with “If you had to explain this app to a friend in one sentence, what would you say?” Shows you how they actually position your product in their head.

Last one that works well: “What’s the biggest hassle when using this app?” People love complaining, so they give detailed answers. Way more actionable than a 1-10 score.

Ask “What would make you use this app more often?” instead of the recommend question. That shows you exactly what features to build or fix. Follow up with “What almost made you delete this app?” to catch churn risks early. Those two questions give you a roadmap. The recommend score just gives you a number that doesn’t tell you what to do next.

Ask when they last used a competitor app and why.
