What discovery questions have you found most useful for spotting trends in user behavior analytics?

I’ve been digging into our user behavior data lately. Some questions seem to uncover more insights than others.

Curious what discovery questions you all rely on to spot meaningful trends. What’s worked well for you?

Here are two key questions I always dig into:

How long does it take new users to complete core actions?
This reveals onboarding friction and where people get stuck.

What’s the typical path for users who upgrade to paid plans?
Shows what convinces free users to open their wallets.

Both questions uncover actionable insights to boost activation and conversion. I’ve used them across dozens of apps to find quick wins.

Don’t overcomplicate it. Focus on a few key metrics tied to revenue, then optimize relentlessly.

Which tasks do users bail on halfway through? Shows where people get stuck or lose interest.

I always look at which screens users spend the most time on. It shows what they find valuable.

Also, tracking how often people come back to the app tells me if they’re forming a habit. Both metrics help me focus my marketing on the features users actually care about.

Retention rate over time is a big one. Shows if people stick around. Also look at feature usage patterns. Some features might be more popular than you think.

Three questions that always give me solid insights:

  1. What actions do users take right before they churn?
Helps spot red flags and friction points.

  2. Which features correlate with higher lifetime value?
    Great for prioritizing product updates.

  3. How does behavior differ between power users and casual users?
Reveals what hooks people and drives engagement.

I use heatmaps and funnel analysis to dig into these. Sometimes the answers surprise you. Like we once found our ‘advanced’ features were scaring off new users, even though power users loved them.
