What's your take on the App Store commission changes?

Been thinking about how the new commission structure affects different app categories.

Seems like it hits subscription apps differently than one-time purchases. Wonder if this changes how people approach their monetization strategy or if most just absorb the difference.

Small devs typically adjust their pricing instead.

The commission structure definitely pushes you to think harder about user value and retention rates. I started focusing more on getting users who actually convert instead of just driving volume. Better to have fewer users who stick around and pay than tons of people who churn after the free trial. Also been testing different trial lengths to see what works best with the new math.

Adjusting pricing seems like a common move. Gotta stay competitive while handling those changes.

The real opportunity is switching monetization models entirely. Some apps moved from subscriptions to freemium with in-app purchases because those hit different commission tiers. Others bundled features differently to justify higher prices without users feeling gouged. Commission changes force you to get creative with your revenue structure instead of just tweaking numbers. Apps that adapted their entire approach usually came out ahead of those that just raised prices.

Ran campaigns for a few subscription apps when the changes rolled out. Most just passed the cost to users - saw subscription prices go up 15-30% across the board.

One client tried keeping prices the same but cut their ad spend instead. That hurt growth way more than expected. Revenue stayed flat but user acquisition dropped hard.

For apps with good retention, eating the commission usually works better than losing new users. But if your LTV is already tight, you’re kinda stuck raising prices.
